The best helicopter tour in Cape Town: all eight flights, ranked honestly

Three things, and only three, and none of them is the one the listings lead with.

Minutes in the air. Every flight here is priced by time, and time buys distance down the peninsula. A twelve-minute flight covers the city bowl and turns back. Eighteen minutes reaches Camps Bay and Hout Bay. Twenty-seven crosses the spine and comes home over False Bay. Forty-eight goes to the cliffs at Cape Point, sixty kilometres south, and back. If you know which of those four pictures you want, you have already chosen your flight.

How much evidence stands behind the rating. This matters more here than on almost any other page we run. The Waterfront flight has 2,000 ratings at 4.8. The next best-evidenced flight has 41. After that the numbers fall off a cliff: 12, 8, 4, 3, 3, 2. Two flights on this page are rated 5.0, and both of those scores rest on fewer than ten people. That does not make them bad — it makes them unproven, which is a different thing and worth knowing before you spend three hundred dollars.

Where it leaves from. Most of these flights use the heliport at the V&A Waterfront, which means no transfer, no early start and no lost morning. One listing collects you from your hotel instead and gives back about ninety minutes of your day in exchange for the convenience. If you are staying out in the southern suburbs or along the False Bay side, that trade is worth doing; if you are staying anywhere near the Waterfront it is not.

First time in Cape Town, one flight, sensible budget. Take the twelve-minute Waterfront flight at $170. The first two minutes are the same on every flight here and they are the two minutes everybody remembers: the harbour drops away, the bowl opens, and the whole mountain fills one side of the cabin. Two thousand people have rated that experience 4.8.

You want the Atlantic seaboard, not just the city. Book eighteen minutes to Camps Bay and Hout Bay at $271, or twenty-seven minutes across both coasts at $352. The eighteen-minute flight is the cheapest way to get under the Twelve Apostles; the twenty-seven-minute one is the cheapest way to see the Atlantic and False Bay in the same flight.

It is an anniversary, a birthday or a proposal. Two flights include champagne on landing: the twelve-minute Twelve Apostles flight at $172 and the twenty-four-minute circle of Table Mountain at $352. The first is rated 4.9, the highest score on this page. Book the one that says champagne rather than hoping to arrange it at the pad.

You will only ever do this once and you want the whole thing. The forty-eight-minute peninsula flight at $698. It is the only flight on this page that reaches Cape Point, and the return leg up False Bay is the part nobody expects to like most.

You are staying far from the city centre, or you do not want to organise anything. The flight with hotel pickup at $264. It is not the best-rated listing here and it is not the cheapest, but it is the only one that removes the logistics entirely.

Every one of these listings sells a duration, and every one of those durations is time in the air. The visit around it is roughly the same whichever flight you book: check-in about forty-five minutes before the slot, a weigh-in, a safety briefing, a walk out to the pad, the flight itself, and photographs afterwards. Ninety minutes is a fair allowance for a twelve-minute flight, and closer to two hours for the long one.

This catches people constantly, and it catches them in an expensive way: they book a restaurant table an hour after a flight and spend the whole aircraft ride watching the clock. Put nothing after the flight and you will enjoy it twice as much.

The corollary is more cheerful. Because the flying is short and the pads are in the middle of the city, a helicopter flight is one of the few Cape Town experiences that genuinely fits into a half-empty morning. You can be back at the Waterfront for coffee before eleven.
